Apple Cinnamon French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
For the French Toast:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (whole, almond, or any preferred type)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 8 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or French bread work well)
- Butter or oil for frying
For the Apple Topping:
- 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are great options)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tsp lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning and add a hint of tartness)
For Serving:
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar (optional)
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apple Topping:
- In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir well to coat the apples with the sugar and spices.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. If using, stir in the lemon juice. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Make the French Toast Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Dip the Bread:
- Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter or oil.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated but not overly soaked.
- Cook the French Toast:
- Place the dipped bread slices onto the preheated skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Add more butter or oil to the pan as needed.
- Assemble and Serve:
- Once the French toast is cooked, transfer to serving plates.
- Spoon the warm apple topping generously over the French toast.
- Garnish:
- Drizzle with maple syrup and dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
- For an extra touch of indulgence, add a dollop of whipped cream.
- Serve:
- Serve the Apple Cinnamon French Toast warm, and enjoy the delicious combination of spiced apples and cinnamon-infused French toast!
Tips
- You can prepare the apple topping ahead of time and reheat it gently before serving.
- For a crunchy texture, sprinkle chopped toasted nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, over the top.
- If you like extra sweetness, add a drizzle of caramel sauce along with the maple syrup
