Apple Cinnamon French Toast Recipe

Ingredients

For the French Toast:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (whole, almond, or any preferred type)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or French bread work well)
  • Butter or oil for frying

For the Apple Topping:

  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are great options)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning and add a hint of tartness)

For Serving:

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Topping:
    • In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir well to coat the apples with the sugar and spices.
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. If using, stir in the lemon juice. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Make the French Toast Batter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Dip the Bread:
    • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter or oil.
    • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated but not overly soaked.
  4. Cook the French Toast:
    • Place the dipped bread slices onto the preheated skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Add more butter or oil to the pan as needed.
  5. Assemble and Serve:
    • Once the French toast is cooked, transfer to serving plates.
    • Spoon the warm apple topping generously over the French toast.
  6. Garnish:
    • Drizzle with maple syrup and dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
    • For an extra touch of indulgence, add a dollop of whipped cream.
  7. Serve:
    • Serve the Apple Cinnamon French Toast warm, and enjoy the delicious combination of spiced apples and cinnamon-infused French toast!

Tips

  • You can prepare the apple topping ahead of time and reheat it gently before serving.
  • For a crunchy texture, sprinkle chopped toasted nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, over the top.
  • If you like extra sweetness, add a drizzle of caramel sauce along with the maple syrup
